The rainy season is upon us. And with it comes the Ottawa Jazz Festival. (The season traditionally returns in time for SuperEx, but at least we won’t have to worry about that this year.) Prepare for 11 days of adventurous sounds to defy even the rainiest of nights.

Ever set your face on fire? On purpose?
Ralph Zavadil has. Or should I say Cap’n Video.

It’s a new era in dance ― marked by guttural movements, rapacious beats and intrepid performers. Mark these words: the urban dance movement is spreading, and is revolutionizing the traditional dance forms standing in its way.

“It’s kind of three different things in one,” Chuck Ragan says of the Canadian tour that brings him to Capital City. The first thing begins Thursday at Mavericks, as Ragan and pal Dave Hause hit town for a folksy revival show. For this and a handful of Ontario dates, the singer and guitarist will perform in the company of trusted bassist Joe Ginsberg and fiddler Jon Gaunt.

Jomar is big, burly bear of a man who thinks nothing of shaving his head and slapping on an alcohol soaked tampon to get a buzz on (apparently a Polish tradition). Jomar likes his drink. If there’s one thing Evolution Theatre’s proven both with February’s Little Martyrs and with this month’s The Lavender Railroad, it’s that the theatre company is not afraid to push the limits.

It is with a certain trepidation that I ring up Jonny O’Callaghan, frontman for hardcore Toronto lifers Liferuiner and known throughout the scene as a hulking, tattooed figure with a steely gaze and inhuman vo-kill pipes. I wonder if I, a beer-addled hesher, will have anything to discuss with a life-long practitioner of the straightedge (sXe) lifestyle. But the fact that some of the heaviest and most pissed-off hardcore ever laid to tape comes from the sXe scene is a bonus: It is all about the heaviosity.

The cross-Atlantic journey of France’s filles du roi, may not seem like a traditional family story, but the shipment of 800 impoverished women to Canada from France in the 17th Century by King Louis XIV to breed and be merry, may be about as traditional as the Canadian family gets.
