In show business, particularly in a market the size of Ottawa’s, survival is spelled, “versatility.” One-trick ponies are the industry’s road kill; to the multi-talented go the spoils ― er, jobs. And nobody is busier these days than the local theatre community’s jack-of-all-trades, David Whiteley.

Monday night was a full one for Fringe. Missing a chance to get tickets to the sold-out opening of Fruitcake: Ten Commandments from the Psyche Ward, I just managed to get tickets to the similarly full Every Story Ever Told and Complex Numbers. The trailer suggests something racy. Making his hazy way around an evening party Michael Mancini, dressed up in a modern-day suit and playing Hamlet, feels alienated; waking up topless the next morning beside an unnamed blonde, Hamlet opens his eyes to a knocking at his door. Horatio (Scott Angus Wilson) enters, and haltingly says, “The king.”

If you enjoy murder mysteries with British sensibilities (and slightly lacking in sense), Deliver us from Evil is your cup of tea. Directed skillfully by Ottawa Little Theatre veteran Sarah Hearn, the show proves a good alternative to the PBS and TVO mystery show line-up — but breaks no new theatrical ground.

It begins, not unlike Dexy’s Midnight Runners’ finest song, with an innocent question: “So what do you think of her?”

In less than two weeks, Canadians by the handful will voice a desire for what looks to be something akin to the status quo. Democracy in action, folks. And as the election approaches, it seems issues — like, you know, corruption and contempt and such — are eliciting yawns from the populace. Less so, a photo of Stephen Harper and the Nickelback guy — perhaps the most polarizing public personalities in the country.
